Job Posting: Historic Places Intern with Heritage NL


Heritage NL is a non-profit organization that promotes the conservation and awareness of Newfoundland and Labrador's historic places and the safeguarding of its Intangible Cultural Heritage. In addition it operates the Provincial Historic Commemorations Program. Heritage NL is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Historical Researcher to undertake a number of projects that will support the various programs of the foundation. These will include the development of short research papers on historical subjects, the rewriting of descriptive texts on designated properties, documentation of Registered Heritage Structures through field study, archival research, and oral histories.


Eligible candidates should have an undergraduate or graduate degree in a relevant field such as: history; archaeology, folklore; architecture; cultural geography; archaeology or other related field. Candidates must meet eligibility requirements under the YCW program and be a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador (although they may be enrolled in an educational institution outside of the province). The job will be situated at the Heritage NL offices in downtown St. John's. 


This is a 26 week position for 35 hours/week @ $20/hr.

Job Posting: Historic Places Researcher - a recent graduate internship.



Are you passionate about sharing the stories of historic places in Newfoundland and Labrador? Do you have a background in oral history interviewing and historic research? A love of public history and folklore? We might have a job for you!

The Intangible Cultural Heritage office of HeritageNL is hiring a Historic Places Researcher, to help research the hidden histories of historic places, and making those stories more accessible to the general public. The position will be researching the heritage, architecture, and oral history of local historic places, with the goal that the collected information and images from the research will be featured in online collections.

The applicant must have excellent oral and written communication skills; knowledge of Newfoundland and Labrador heritage; availability to travel locally; and an undergraduate or masters level degree in history, archaeology, folklore, or architecture. 

Hourly wage: $20.00                                                                                   
The position will run for approximately 25 weeks, finishing Friday, 26 March, 2021.

The Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador (HFNL) is seeking 2 Heritage Writers/Researchers. The positions will run for 12 weeks commencing May 14, 2018. The Researchers/Writers will undertake research about the heritage, architecture, and oral history of local historic places in Newfoundland and Labrador in support of HFNL programs. Candidates should be enrolled in a related program at the undergraduate or graduate level (e.g., history, folklore, cultural geography, archaeology or architecture) and should have excellent written and oral English language and research skills. Experience in working for a heritage organization is an asset. Candidates must be eligible under the Young Canada Works employment program and be residents of Newfoundland & Labrador.

Rate of Pay: $560/week based on 35 hour week

The Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador (HFNL) is a non-profit organization which was established in 1984 to stimulate an understanding of and an appreciation for the heritage of the province.

HFNL will be working to document the untold histories, intangible cultural heritage, and the associated narratives of Newfoundland’s historic places. The Historic Places Intern will be undertaking a project to help HFNL further these goals, by researching the stories and oral histories of historic places, and making those stories more accessible to the general public. This will include photography of historic places, as well as recorded oral histories with local residents. The research will form part of a permanent collection with Memorial University of Newfoundland’s Digital Archives Initiative.

Much of the intern’s work will be in support of existing HFNL programs. The intern will provide research and support services for a variety of heritage projects, but there are three clearly defined tasks which will be undertaken by the intern directly. First, the intern will work to research, and identify stories about historic places. Second, the intern will work on heritage outreach programs and the development of community-based workshops around the themes of place, narrative, and oral history. Third, the intern will document stories, including oral history recordings, photo documentation, and report writing. The position will also work with HFNL staff on a heritage conference to be held in Oct 2017, and will compile conference presentations into a post-conference toolkit.

The applicant must have excellent oral and written communication skills; good knowledge of Microsoft Excel; valid driver’s licence and use of automobile (if possible); availability to travel throughout Newfoundland & Labrador; as well as a degree in history, archaeology, folklore, or architecture. Previous experience with a heritage organization is an asset, as is a keen interest in folklore, oral history, architectural history, or vernacular architecture.

$18/hour for approximately 40 weeks, ending March 30, 2018.

Want to work on an oral history project with us? Check out this job posting!



We are partnering with the Conservation Corp's Environmental and Cultural Hiring Opportunity (ECHO) program to hire a Cultural Conservation Intern (Location: St. John’s).

The Cultural Conservation Project will research and document oral traditions and stories about local historic sites and cultural practices in and around the St. John’s area. The project will include photography of people, customs, and places, as well as digitally recorded oral histories with local residents. All material will be compiled and made accessible to the public through a partnership with Memorial University’s Digital Archives Initiative. The project will also include the identification of interviewees, buildings, and places for cultural research and documentation.

Successful applicants will be required to participate in Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) training and follow all OH&S regulations and policies of CCNL. Period of employment is July 4th to August 19th, 2016.

Historic Places Researcher
Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador (HFNL) is seeking a Historic Places Researcher, to assist with updating the Provincial Register of Historic Places.

The position will run for 13 weeks, with a start date in May 2016, with a salary of $15/hour.

The primary work of the Researcher will be to assist with work on the Provincial Register of Historic Places, updating the online registry, and ensuring that online collections match HFNL’s paper files on building designation and grants.

The applicant must have excellent oral and written communication skills; and a desire to work with collections related to the heritage and architecture of local historic places. Should currently be registered in undergraduate or masters level course in history, archaeology, folklore, or architecture. Previous experience with a heritage organization is an asset. Good computer skills required, including ability to do research, data entry, and word processing.

Applicant must be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada, legally entitled to work in Canada. Will be between the ages of 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment, and must be a full time student during the preceding academic semester, who intends on returning to school next semester.

The Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador was established in 1984 by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to preserve the built heritage of the Province. The Foundation is now accepting applications for a Built Heritage Intern. This position will be funded under “Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage” and is for a period of 52 weeks.

The candidate would be a recent graduate of a post- secondary institution with a background in the built heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador. They should be proficient in architectural terminology, building methods, and historically appropriate building materials. The job would include assisting Foundation staff in program delivery, notably designation, granting, building inspections, maintaining records and delivery of services.

Job Posting: Intangible Cultural Heritage Intern
This is a position with Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador (HFNL) Intangible Cultural Heritage Office, with a salary of $15/hour. The position will require a candidate with strong writing and speaking skills in English, with a degree in folklore, public history, anthropology, or related discipline.

Previous experience with a heritage organization is an asset, as is a keen interest in folklore and local culture. Excellent organizational skills are a must, and an interest in textile arts or fabric traditions is a bonus.

The ICH Intern will work with staff in the planning and development of programs related to the collection, conservation, transmission, and celebration of the intangible cultural heritage of the province, as well as helping to identify aspects or themes of ICH under threat.

The intern will conduct archival and historical research on the First World War knitting of socks for soldiers at the Front, and the work of the Women’s Patriotic Association, and to make that information available to the public through online collections and public presentations. The intern will also assist in the creation of workshops and after-school programs that will bring together seniors and children, to teach and share knowledge and skills around knitting.

The Intern will document and identify key participants as well as conduct oral history interviews, and help organize, plan and run events. The job will also include some blog and report writing, taking minutes of committee meetings, and assisting with intangible cultural heritage workshops. The position will end March 31st, 2016.

Project Title: An Environmental History of Change Islands

Project Description: Team members will be “Community Historians” recording the unique history of Change Islands and how its natural environment has sustained residents for hundreds of years – providing shelter, food and fuel. The Team will interview, videotape and photograph three generations and their experiences of ‘living off the land,’ and develop informational tools such as tourism booklets, community storyboards, and newsletter articles. The Team will also conduct several Environmental Awareness Events, which will include a presentation, delivery of games, arts and crafts, activities; and other duties as assigned. Employment is from June 30 to August 22, 2014.

Team Leader (1 Position): The Team Leader is the day-to-day supervisor for the Green Team. As such this person is responsible for the conduct of Team Members and the work they undertake. The Team Leader ensures that the work required is properly assigned and carried out, and ensures that the project proceeds smoothly. This involves planning, maintaining discipline, daily acquisition of materials required, effective liaison with the Project Proponent and the Conservation Corps, troubleshooting, etc. A Team Leader is expected to demonstrate the ability to plan and organize and must have previous leadership and supervisory skills. This position is for eight weeks with a rate of pay $11.00 per hour for 35 hours per week.
Team Member (3 Positions): The Team Member is an integral part of the Green Team. The Team Member follows the direction given by the Team Leader, has the ability to work well in a team environment and feels that s/he can make a positive contribution to the projects undertaken. This position is for eight weeks at $10.00 per hour for 35 hours per week.

Qualifications for this project:
· Experience and/or interest with photography, videography and graphic design an asset

The Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove Heritage Committee was formed in October 1995, with the goal of preserving and promoting our Town's rich history through the establishment of a museum. The Museum is divided into five themes representing different aspects of its heritage:

Fishery - a collection of local photos, fishing net displays, and various fishing and sealing artifacts.

Agriculture - photos, tools and items representing early farming activity.

Sports - highlights, through photos and artifacts, its strong rowing heritage from the famous Outer Cove crew that rowed the time of 9:13 in 1901 to present day rowers.

Lifestyles - re-creation of a traditional kitchen containing artifacts from everyday life. Also includes artifacts and pictures reflecting the importance of the church and religion in daily life.

Military - a tribute to those of the community who served in any armed conflict.

The Museum also contains an archive of information regarding history of the community that is available to the public upon request.

DUTIES: Expressions of interest are invited from qualified individuals for
the position of a part-time Educational Assistant to provide support to the
Program Coordinator in the delivery of the Chevron Open Minds at The Rooms
program. Functions will include the delivery of group tours and related
education programs and workshops, meeting and greeting of Open Minds school
groups, setting up of learning materials and classroom space and responding
to student, teacher and volunteer queries. The Educational Assistant will
assist in the development of new programs and the ongoing evaluation of
program effectiveness and efficiency. Reporting to the Manager of

perform related work as required. Employment is 19 hours per week, from
mid-September to mid-June.

QUALIFICATIONS: The Educational Assistant must possess strong communication
and interpersonal skills and experience in the delivery of interpretation
and/or educational programs. Successful applicants must have good knowledge
of museum/art gallery/ archives operations, background knowledge of
Newfoundland and Labrador history and culture, and the ability to adapt and
deliver hands-on education programs to a range of groups. These
qualifications would normally be acquired through successful completion of
the Heritage Interpreter Certificate, MANL Certificate Course, supplemented
by completion of university courses in history, archaeology, art history,
archival studies, biology, education, geography, or folklore. Equivalent
combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Traditional Water Sources Survey Fieldworker

Memorial’s Department of Folklore and the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador are hiring a researcher to work on their “Traditional Knowledge of Springs and Wells in the St. John's Area” project. The project is designed to map locational information and to collect oral histories about wells, springs and natural water sources within the St. John's Area. It will research the location and associated knowledge of springs, wells, water diviners, spouts, wishing wells, rag wells, traditional knowledge about water purity and cleanliness, techniques to prevent fouling of water sources, and traditional values around drinking water. This research will focus on three main concepts related to water sources and traditional management of those resources: geospatial knowledge about the resource; knowledge about use and management of the resources; and local values about those resources.

The applicant must have excellent oral and written communication skills; be curious, outgoing and willing to talk to property owners and local informants; have experience in conducting folklore or oral history interviews; and have training (preferably at the graduate level) in Folklore, Archaeology, Cultural Geography, History or another related field. Valid driver’s licence and use of automobile, and previous experience with a heritage organization is an asset. Someone willing to get wet and dirty is a bonus!

Work will be based out of the offices of the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador, St. John’s, and will begin as soon as possible after the closing date for applications, running approximately through July to October 2013.

The Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador (HFNL)  is hiring a Heritage Outreach Officer to promote and assist in the delivery of heritage programs, under the direction of both the Executive Director, and the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Development Officer.

Heritage Outreach Officer will

  • Promote HFNL programs;
  • Help establish heritage committees in participating communities;
  • Assist the ICH Development Officer with cognitive mapping in heritage districts and other research projects;
  • Prepare basic inventories of heritage assets;
  • Assist with published reports and community presentations;
  • Undertake activities that build community capacity for heritage districts and other heritage projects;
  • Assist on projects that demonstrate the link between built heritage and ICH;
  • Assist core HFNL staff with maintenance of files, telephone work, research and office duties as required.

Job Posting: Summer Student wanted for historic plaque project


The Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador (HFNL) is a non-profit heritage organization dedicated to the conservation of historic structures. HFNL is currently looking for a summer student to work on a research project gathering information about the organization’s historic plaque program. For many years, HFNL has been placing historic plaques on registered heritage structures throughout the province. Many of those are missing, out of date, or in need of repair. The student will be conducting telephone interviews with property owners across the province to identify what buildings have historic plaques and what condition they are in, and compiling a spreadsheet and report on the state of the historic plaque program.

The student should have a background in history or folklore, with an excellent telephone manner, good organizational and computer skills, and an interest in heritage conservation. The position will be based in St. John’s.

Students must meet ALL these criteria:
- Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or refugee under Immigration Refugee Protection Act; and
- Must be planning to attend a post-secondary institution on a full-time basis in the coming academic year; and
- Must have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year; and
- Must be between 15 and 30 years old (inclusive); and
- May NOT hold another full-time job (30 hours per week or more) while on the SWASP placement; and
- May NOT be attending classes full-time while on the SWASP placement.

This position is pending approval of funding. If approved, it will cover a 280-hour community service placement (normally over 8 weeks), and the student will:

- Receive a $1400 Tuition Voucher, redeemable at any recognized post-secondary institution upon completion of 280 hours; and
- Receive a $1400 stipend over the course of the placement.
