Upcoming Wood Windows Workshop in English Harbour!

Heritage NL is excited to be presenting "Care and Maintenance of Historic Wooden Windows", a  workshop led by Mike Paterson of Paterson Woodworking.

On September 14th, Michael Paterson will be giving a one day workshop on the general care and maintenance of wooden windows, designed for the owners or managers of historic homes.

The workshop will be located at the English Harbour Arts Centre, formerly the All Saints Anglican Church, in English Harbour, Trinity Bay. In this workshop, Mike will address a window on the church, demonstrate glazing and re-glazing techniques, and discuss general best practices for rot repair and painting. All materials and tools needed during the workshop will be provided. Lunch will be provided.

Heritage Update - Wood Windows and Energy Efficiency, Sawmilling, and Three New Heritage Designations

In the April 2024 heritage update, we share news about three new Registered Heritage Structures in Burin, Indian Cove, and Heart’s Content. We look back at 75 Years of Co-operative Heritage in the province, and look forward investigating energy efficiency of wooden windows, and an ongoing project to build new double-glazed wooden windows using traditional techniques. We finish with the story of sawyer Moses Drover and his Whiteway, Trinity Bay, sawmill.

Heritage Update January 2024: Presentations, plaques, photographs, and a ribbon cutting!

In the first edition of the Heritage Update for 2024:

• Heritage NL is the recipient of the Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Community Programming for its Craft at Risk project; 
• updating property plaques for Registered Heritage Structures to include the stories of the women who lived there, with a note on Lambert and Johanna Greene House and Outbuildings, Tilting, Fogo Island; 
• Heritage NL visits the Eastport Peninsula to host scanning parties in Salvage and Eastport, to document, preserve and share old photographs for the communities; 
• looking back at Heritage NL’s Skills Training and Mentor-Apprentice Program, with a peek inside the heritage window workshop of Neil Hammond; 
• and the City of St. John's and Heritage NL cut the ribbon on the official reopening of the Bowring Park Cantilever Bridge.

Living Heritage Podcast Ep214 Repair and Restoration with Rex Passion

In this episode of the Living Heritage Podcast we talk with Rex Passion about historic restorations and repairs. Rex describes his background, what brought him to Newfoundland, his work on Kent Cottage, and leading workshops and demonstrations to teach traditional skills. Rex apprenticed as a cabinetmaker and carpenter in California and Boston in the 1970s. In 2006 he sold his construction company and architecture firm, Classic Restorations, and subsequently moved to Torbay. His vocation of restoring old houses became his avocation, heritage preservation. He currently sits on the Landfall Trust Board of Directors, and recently taught a wooden window repair and restoration workshop with Heritage NL.
