Heritage Update - Wood Windows and Energy Efficiency, Sawmilling, and Three New Heritage Designations

In the April 2024 heritage update, we share news about three new Registered Heritage Structures in Burin, Indian Cove, and Heart’s Content. We look back at 75 Years of Co-operative Heritage in the province, and look forward investigating energy efficiency of wooden windows, and an ongoing project to build new double-glazed wooden windows using traditional techniques. We finish with the story of sawyer Moses Drover and his Whiteway, Trinity Bay, sawmill.

Heritage Update January 2024: Presentations, plaques, photographs, and a ribbon cutting!


In the first edition of the Heritage Update for 2024:

  • Heritage NL is the recipient of the Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Community Programming for its Craft at Risk project; 
  • updating property plaques for Registered Heritage Structures to include the stories of the women who lived there, with a note on Lambert and Johanna Greene House and Outbuildings, Tilting, Fogo Island; 
  • Heritage NL visits the Eastport Peninsula to host scanning parties in Salvage and Eastport, to document, preserve and share old photographs for the communities; 
  • looking back at Heritage NL’s Skills Training and Mentor-Apprentice Program, with a peek inside the heritage window workshop of Neil Hammond; 
  • and the City of St. John's and Heritage NL cut the ribbon on the official reopening of the Bowring Park Cantilever Bridge.

Heritage Update for June 2023 - New plaques, old memories, and a herd of Lop Chops invades Centreville

In the Heritage Update for June 2023: Heritage NL and the St. George’s Indian Band unveil a new bilingual English and Mi’kmaq plaque for the St. George’s Courthouse; as part of the 2023 Winter Carnival in Centreville-Wareham-Trinity and Indian Bay, Heritage NL was asked to lead a Memory Mug Up afternoon at the Wareham church hall; Heritage NL's exhibition proposal for The Early Lebanese Community in Newfoundland receives funding as part of Digital Museums Canada; a herd of Lop Chops and Horsey Chops take over Centreville; and several of our Registered Heritage Structures receive funding through Heritage NL's Maintenance Grant program.

Craft at Risk, New Knitters, Research in Change Islands and Harbour Grace, and Heritage Polaroids!

Heritage Update Summer 2018 - Documenting Traditional Places and Skills




In this summer edition of the Heritage Update newsletter, we are focusing on traditional skills and knowledge around our historic places. Jerry Dick writes about an oral history project to document the knowledge of traditional artisans and carpenters; Terra Barrett writes on “Remembering the Merchants of Main Street" -- a Windsor-based project which is part of the Virtual Museum of Canada’s Community Stories investment program; and summer intern Keith Burgess writes on the designated St. James Anglican Church in Battle Harbour Labrador.

Heritage Update: Grants, Conferences, & Red Cliff and Random Head Memories



In Heritage Update Number 070 for March-April 2017: we introduce some changes to our Designation and Grant Programs; share memories from the former Red Cliff Base; announce the grant deadline for the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Program 2017; meet the Coopers, the lighthouse family of Random Head in a special article from the Clarenville Heritage Society; and ask you to save the date for the "Adapting our Heritage Conference" in St. John’s, October 25 – 28, 2017. Fisheries Heritage, Oral History, Salvation Army Citadel in Elliston, and more



For this month's update, we are showcasing more of our built heritage work, with updates on work related to our fisheries heritage program, and an expansion of our documentation work on our registered heritage structures, including the newly designated Salvation Army Citadel in Elliston. Also, we have more information on our ongoing project to digitize oral history collections in Grand Falls-Windsor, and notes on the recent Canadian Declaration on Intangible Cultural Heritage in support of Canada ratifying the 2003 UNESCO convention on ICH.
