Scrounging (sometimes stealing) started weeks in advance. There was much boasting about how many tires and barrels each group had. Some had veritable mountains of stuff. Our gang was not among the front runners in this endeavor. One Bonfire Night, as we were piling up our modest stash in a garden on Water Street, prior to lighting it, we thought to check out the competition. Down the road we went and, in the dark, observed that they were carrying their stuff to the bottom of their garden in relays from their barn. So, every time they went back to the barn to get more, over the fence we went and took whatever we could get our hands on. Their pile stopped growing and our fire was way bigger than we ever hoped for. So, some of the stuff we burned that night had been stolen TWICE!

Duncan Howell Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00654280032973826646noreply@blogger.com
